What is a Watchstander? A Watchstander is the person responsible for monitoring, and operating the Coast Guard Station Communications Center. They handle regular telephone (landline) communications as well as routine radio traffic. The Watchstander also gathers information in distress situations and relays instructions with other data to civilian and Coast Guard vessels and aircraft.
Who can become a Watchstander?Watchstanders are Active, Reserve or Auxiliary Coast Guard personnel. Auxiliarist are the civilian Coast Guard component, and must be at least 17 years of age and a US citizen. The Auxiliarist is a volunteer, and receives the same local training at Station Ft. Myers Beach as an Active or Reserve member. People with prior military service, Ham radio operators or emergency dispatchers might be especially interested in this program.
How long does it take to become a Watchstander?There is no time limit on training to become a Watchstander. You learn by practical experience gained through one-on-one training with a senior Watchstander in the Comms Center. There is a training study guide for reference. You will stand supervised training watches totaling a minimum of 20 hours day and 20 hours night (watches are generally 4 hour segments). Additional time will be provided for review of training materials. You will be prepared and confident after the training program. The training schedule is flexible, and we will work to accommodate your schedule.
Will I have help if things get busy?Yes, the Officer of the Day will always be available. The "OOD" is the person you report to, and will offer assistance as needed. In addition, other members of the Station's staff will also be available if they are needed. You will work as a Team.
Why should I become a Watchstander?Station Ft. Lauderdale located on Dania Beach is in need of additional Watchstanders. Augmentation by the Auxiliary is an important part of maintaining Search and Rescue as well as other operations.
