What is a Boat Crew Member or Engineer?

A Boat Crew member is responsible to assist with the underway operations of CG vessels.  Duties are directed by the Coxswain, and you will be serving on Coast Guard vessels up to 41'.  Operations include Search and Rescue as well as other assignments on area waters.

The Engineer is the person responsible for the mechanical operations of the vessels.  They make inspection rounds while underway, perform any needed repairs, as well as do shore side maintenance on the vessels.  Duties are directed by the Coxswain while underway, and the Engineering Officer while on shore.

  

Who can become a Crew Member or Engineer?

Crew and Engineers are Active, Reserve or Auxiliary Coast Guard personnel.  Auxiliarist are the civilian Coast Guard component, and must be at least 17 years of age and a US citizen.  The Auxiliarist is a volunteer, and receives the same local training at Station Ft. Lauderdale as an Active or Reserve member.  People with prior military service or experience in the marine trades might be especially interested in this program.

How long does it take to become qualified?

There is no time limit on training to become a qualified.  You learn by practical experience gained through one-on-one training with the boat crew.  There is a training study guide for reference.  There will be several supervised hours of underway training on the local waters with additional classroom time, as well as review time for the training materials.  For the Crew & Engineer programs, there are additional physical requirements adjusted for age.  You will be prepared and confident after the training program.  The training schedule is flexible, and we will work to accommodate you.

Will I have help if things get busy?

Yes, the boat Coxswain will always be available.  The Coxswain is the person you report to, and will offer assistance as needed.  In addition, other members of the boat crew will also be available if they are needed.  You will work as a Team.

Why should I become Crew Member or Engineer?

Station Ft.
